Weston High School Announces New Head Football Coach

Weston High School has announced that the new Head Football Coach will be Jim Wilcon, familiar to many Wildcats fans as the Head Coach for the High School lacrosse team. The Owl had to come out of summer basking on the soccer and baseball sidelines to talk about the impending new dynasty of Weston high school football. Just so you’re aware, there are few sports about which she knows less than lacrosse and football. Except that randomly choosing the Las Vegas/Oakland/Los Angeles/Oakland Raiders to cheer for as a 10-year-old somehow really annoys people.

But I digress (you’ve missed these digressions, have you not? Now ask Coach Wilcon if he also cheers for the Silver and Black. You may be surprised. Oops, digression parte deux). Reached by phone this week, Coach Jim is all fired up to make football a leading sport at the high school. And there’s perhaps no one more qualified. Ready for the bio? Have a seat:

Coach Wilcon has more than 30 years of coaching experience at the college and high school levels. At the collegiate level, he has coached at Union College, the University of Pennsylvania, Plymouth State, Curry College, and Tufts University.  He has been a part of three undefeated seasons, four League Championships including an Ivy League title, and participated in the NCAA playoffs four times.  Along the way he coached on both sides of the ball, was a Special Teams Coordinator and a Defensive Coordinator.

At the high school level, Coach Wilcon was on the staff of three League Champions, the Defensive Coordinator of a Super Bowl Champion and a Sectional Champion, and set a school record for most points in a game (61) and most points in a season (351) as an Offensive Coordinator. He also has previous Head Coaching experience at Marblehead and Newton South high schools. He himself played Defensive Back at the University of Rhode Island.

Whoo!! We are lucky to have Coach Wilcon come on board for football which will have challenges this year in terms of roster — the entire Weston High School now numbers under 650 students, and many of them don’t play football.

“This is a longer-term play. We don’t have Pop Warner in town anymore, but we have a great new Flag Football league for kids grade K-6 to get introduced to the game. We also encourage more kids to play on the middle school football team so they come up to the high school with positive exposure to the game. Hopefully, “success breeds success” so kids will continue to come out and help the program grow.”

If anyone can move Weston up the rankings, it will be Coach Wilcon who is much beloved by the lacrosse team players. He will continue as the lacrosse coach as well, in case anyone was worried.

“I am super excited and honored about becoming the new Head Football Coach at Weston, and we are looking to grow and build the program back up to a championship level.  Please contact me directly if you have any questions about joining the program if you are an incoming Freshman or are at the High School already and are interested in jumping in!.”
