UPDATE 9/29/2021: SPECIAL TOWN MEETING SCHEDULED FOR NOVEMBER 30, 2021 HAS BEEN CANCELED BY SELECT BOARD VOTE ON 9/28/2021.

If you are planning to submit a Citizens’ Petition for Special Town Meeting (scheduled for November 30, 2021 at 7 pm in the High School Auditorium), tickety-tock, they are due on Friday October 1. Citizens are always encouraged to speak with Town Manager Leon Gaumond and the Select Board in advance of said Meeting, as it is more than possible that a formal petition can be avoided, and fewer hours spent in the immensely uncomfortable auditorium (or Proctor folding) chairs. The Select Board meets tomorrow night…but let’s get real, you may be too late for this go-round.

Because only items printed in the Warrant Book may have action taken at Town Meeting, the deadline for petitions is almost two months before the actual meeting. Printing takes time, folks. So does getting the signatures–in the case of Annual Town Meeting, you will need the signatures of 50 or more registered voters of Weston. For Special Town Meeting, you would need 100 or more registered voters of Weston. And get this: To petition the Select Board to call a Special Town Meeting not already scheduled, signatures of 200 or more registered voters of Weston, or 20 percent of registered voters, whichever is less, is required. [Note to Town officials: the old terminology of “Selectmen” runs abundant in all of the links and website for petitions. Let’s get crackin’ on changing that, okay? ]

Please note that the required Citizens’ Petition paperwork may be obtained at any time of the year from the Office of the Town Manager and the Select Board and is also included at the end of the guidelines online
