Ice Skating with Weston Recreation: Memberships Open, Lesson Sign-Up Tomorrow

Set your alarm clocks! The Weston Recreation Department opens registration for ice skating lessons on Tuesday, October 26 at 10 AM.  Lessons are available for beginners to advanced, age 4.5 through adult.  I hear all toddlers will be carded. All prospective participants are required to purchase a Weston Skating Club membership to access lessons, family skate, or Men’s hockey. Special family and senior rates can be applied.

Registration is also open now for Men’s Hockey.  This is an opportunity to play pickup, no-check adult hockey on Sunday mornings starting November 21. Two comments here from the Owl: if a woman wants to play in this group, can she? No, not me, rockstars, but I know of a couple of good women players–do they need a league of their own? Okay, three questions: is this really “no-check” or is this “oops, I guess I squished you accidentally on purpose?” Yes, I’m a major hockey fan. Go Sharks.

Family Skate will take place every Sunday from 4 to 6 PM starting November 21. This is open, recreational skate only, no hockey playing allowed.  You must have a membership to access Family Skate, but each family may bring up to 3 guests at $10 per guest per visit. All skaters age 16 and under must wear helmets at all times.

Lessons, hockey and family skate all take place on the ice at Rivers School’s MacDowell Athletic Center (333 Winter Street). Lessons are taught with US Figure Skating’s (USFSA) Basic Skills Program curriculum and consist of 25-minute instruction and 25-minute supervised practice. With luck and inaccurate woolly bear caterpillar reporting, College Pond outdoor skating will open this winter for everyone to show off their new skills.

Outdoor skating rules! Okay, this is Finland.

Capacity for all skating opportunities have returned to normal levels.  Participants will be required to comply with any COVID guidelines in place.  As of now, everybody must where facemasks during all activities, and you should not attend when feeling ill. Currently they are not requiring advanced registration for family skate sessions. More information can be found on the website or by calling 781-786-6260.
