Gustazo’s Chef Patricia Estorino Nominated for James Beard Award

Sorry no photo of chef…only empanadas! Courtesy photo.

In the Owl’s usual perusal of local media, a story on the Waltham Channel stuck out–Waltham resident and chef Patricia Estorino of Gustazo’s Kitchen and Bar in Waltham has been named one of 20 semifinalists for Best Chef in the Northeast in the James Beard Foundation’s 2022 Restaurant and Chef Awards. You can read the Waltham Channel’s story on their page here–remember, support local media! And the Waltham Channel actually has a photo of the chef which I am tempted to steal but won’t.

The James Beard Awards “recognize exceptional talent and achievement in the culinary arts, hospitality, media, and broader food system, as well as a demonstrated commitment to racial and gender equity, community, sustainability, and a culture where all can thrive. Established in 1990, the James Beard Awards are among the nation’s most prestigious honors recognizing leaders in the culinary and food media industries.” (that’s from the James Beard Awards page, of course).

Gustazo’s has two locations, one in Cambridge and one on Moody Street in Waltham. The Waltham location’s patio service was particularly welcome on pandemic days and the Owl is personally counting the hours until it opens again. Having lived in Miami for six years, one of the things most missed is Cuban food. One of the things least missed would be everything else. Just kidding, Floridians. Head on over and enjoy some Cuban food (hello, ropa vieja) before the winners are announced in Chicago on June 11.

Eat local!

Gustazo’s Cuban Kitchen & Bar is located at 240 Moody St, Waltham, and also at 2067 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge. Tel: 855-GUSTAZO (487-8296). https://www.gustazo-cubancafe.com/waltham/
