Brockton Rox Baseball Welcomes Former ‘Cat Ortiz to Summer League

If you know nothing about baseball, well, you know more than I do. But one thing I do know is that someone named David Ortiz was an all-star, makes me want to say “this is our f’ing town” about Boston allll the time, but apparently was also a Westonian until moving out maybe three years ago. His kids spent time in the Weston public schools and were awesome ‘cats though I never met them as they’re a bit older than Owlets.

In any case, this summer, one of those Ortiz kids is back in Boston-ish, playing for the Brockton Rox…ummm…Kangaroos? Is this possible? Yes, it is, and D’Angelo Ortiz will be a kangaroo, as well as Manny Ramirez, Jr, who also apparently has a famous dad. Folks, the last time I watched baseball with any seriousness, Ryne Sandburg played for the Cubs. There is no park like Wrigley and you can all just fight me on that one.

After the announcement on Facebook, I admit I had to look up what was a utility player. Why don’t they just call it an “I can play any position any time” player? A Swiss Army knife player? Hmm. Anyway, the Brockton Rox seems to be an interesting collegiate summer league team with a wordle-like name that nods to the Boston Red Sox and to the boxers Rocky Marciano and Marvelous Marvin Hagler, both from Brockton. Seriously, who knew? And yes, K-O the Kangaroo is their mascot because Australian marsupials wearing a baseball hat scream baseball to all of us.

In any case, if you’d like to cheer on D’Angelo and his teammates and pay slightly less than the Fenway $15 beers, head over to Brockton for a summer night out. You can find out more here.

Once a ‘cat, always a ‘cat.
