Let the wild rumpus start, Weston, as if it hadn’t already given the number of submissions to the Weston Owl. I cannot keep up but I am trying. Next up in the arts extravaganza is Weston Friendly Society’s rendering of Disney’s ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ with performances May 14-22 at the Town Hall Auditorium (11 Town House Road).

I can’t imagine there is anyone out there who does not know the storyline but basically, it goes like this. Dad screws up, his daughter has to go live in a big castle with a mean fluffy beast, but meets some fun friends like a candlestick and a teapot. Lots of intrigues and fighting, dancing, and then [spoiler alert] the fluffy turns out to be a cursed prince just looking for love. Happy ending. Don’t take my word for it–go relive the magic.

The Owl got some fun facts from Belle herself, Nora Sullivan. As most Westonians know, Weston Friendly Society is the second oldest theatre company in the country and always has a local component. There are five Weston residents involved in the production this time, and six family units within the case/production team. The director, Hollis Welch Sullivan, is a Weston native and has been with WFS since her first show in 1976. She is a winner of the Moss Hart Award for best production of a musical.

The choreographer, Daniel Forest Sullivan, is the current Artistic Director of WFS. He is a recipient of the EMACT/Dash award for best choreography of a musical, as well as a Moss Hart Award winner for best production for WFS’ 2019 production of Annie.

Weston Friendly’s ‘Beauty and the Beast’ is the longest run-up-to-performance ever — two years in the making. The show was originally slated to be the spring show of the 2020 season, but Covid had other plans and performances.
