Weston School Meals Free Again this School Year 2022-23

On July 28, 2022, Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker signed into law a one-year extension of School Meals for All for the 2022-2023 school year. Universal school meals for the coming school year means that every student in MA who wants or needs a school breakfast or lunch will receive meals at no cost to their family.
The Owl checked in with Charlie Kotufo, the Director of Food Services for Weston Public Schools, who has (sans competition) the fastest response time to Owl questions of anyone in school administration. Our Athletic Director is a close second. Do not ask me the slowest; you already know it.
“All students are permitted one breakfast and one lunch daily at no cost.,” saiid Mr. Kotufo. “Anything additional, such as a la carte items, snacks, or second meals are available but will have to be purchased and a positive balance will be required in the student’s My School Bucks account.”
Note that the Owlets could easily take out three lunches, much like the owlets eating over on the On the Wing facebook page. Yikes.
Delighted to learn of another year of free school lunches in MA. Nevertheless, as a
Weston senior, I’m wondering what happens to unwanted, unopened lunch items. Could they be placed in a cooler with ice and distributed locally where there is a need? I have read about a variation on this theme in a school in Canada.
An excellent question and one you may want to direct to Charlie Kotufo, Director of Food Services for WPS: kotufok@weston.org.
