The World is Your Oyster with Weston’s Council on Aging

Yesterday, a flyer arrived with the announcement of September events with Weston’s COA. While the Owl has not yet reached Level Six of Age Mastery, I do love looking at their events and I’m going to try to get on the waitlist for a couple including a visit to an oyster hatchery! What? Yes, so fun, and there are many more events and programs that you can see here in their newsletter.
Along with virtual visits to Germany and International Peace Day discussions and music and art and everything, a visit to the Island Creek Oyster Farm really stood out for New England-type fun. Hopefully, there is still space for you, and then if one of you could cancel last minute so I will need to stand in, that would be much appreciated. Check out the COA, where life keeps getting better.

Island Creek Oyster Farm: Private Group Hatchery & Boat Tour. Wednesday, September 14, 9:15-2:15,
Meet at the COA at 9:15. Your 2-hour tour starts where the oysters do: in the hatchery, where you will see how farmers recreate the ideal conditions for oysters to reproduce and learn the stages of growing algae (oyster food).
Next, you’ll head to the nursery where the team monitors oysters through a period of exponential growth before they are big enough to be planted out in the Bay… your next stop!
The captain of the Nathaniel Winsor, a 27-foot Carolina Skiff, will guide you out on the water for an up-close look at the heart of what they do at the farm. We’ll share oyster tales, toss back some freshly harvested oysters, and soak up the sun. If you’re up for it, they will even teach you to shuck your own.
Rain or shine. Cost: $100, includes tour, oysters and transportation. Call the COA at 781-786-6280 to register. Registration begins August 29. Payment required upon registration. Cancellation deadline 9/9 by 4:00 pm. Refunds will not be issued after this date.
The Weston Council on Aging is located on the ground floor of the Community Center, 20 Alphabet Lane. Phone 781-786-6280.
