Land’s Sake is looking for volunteers to help out at the Annual Tapping Day, this year on Saturday, January 28 from 11 am to 1 pm. Please note that you should only do this activity with people who know which trees are sugar maples and which trees are say, elms, and are not going to net you pancake stuff. If there is not a Canadian in the group, refuse to go. There’s a bunch of folks who can identify a sugar maple from outer space. Singing the Canadian anthem is optional especially if you only know the first line: “O Canada” only lasts you so long.

Where was I? Oh yes, join Land’s Sake this Saturday, January 28th from 11am-1pm, venturing out into the Weston woods to install taps and buckets on hundreds of maple trees. In order for maple sap to flow, the weather has to be just right and Saturday looks to be ideal, according to Canadians and non-Canadians alike. These are the same people who think poutine is edible though so keep that in mind.

The day will kick off with a brief overview of the tapping process, a demonstration of how it’s done, and then off you go into the woods to start tapping. You can read a bit of background on tapping on the old LS blog here.

If you’re interested in joining, sign up here and Land’s Sake will send you an email with the location details. All ages are welcome though kids won’t be doing the drilling (this is obvious, no?). If you have a cordless drill, please bring it along with a 5/16″ drill bit.

Depending on how the season goes, Land’s Sake may also need volunteers later in the season to help collect sap.

Don’t worry, the trees only scream a tiny bit and you won’t hear it.
