Fortunately for Weston, there is no dearth of local farms within horseback or bicycling distance (ahahaha, as if). Most of them offer shares in their Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), a wonderful way for farms to get early financial support for a season, as well as bring an element of fun to your weekly shopping experience. You never know exactly what you’ll get in your share week over week, except in a general greens-in-May, tomatoes-in-September kind of way.

One local farm, which the Owl has covered frequently, levels up on surprise weekly shares. Hannan Healthy Farms, based at Umbrello Field, right near the 117 crossing of the MBTA in Lincoln brings world food home. Our weekly share last summer was filled with moments of “what the heck is this?” and then an email or visit with Mohammend Hannan to ask what it was and what to do with it. Often Mohammed had a recipe that went along with the new-to-us veggie, which brought about such delights as shrimp in amaranth sauce. This year, Mohammed has promised to level up and actually write down recipes for us all. A cultural food extravaganza.

Hannan Healthy Foods CSA shares are available on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. It is a certified organic operation, and grows fresh, healthy veggies, herbs, fruits, and flowers all season long. Find CSA signups, options, pickups, and pricing on the website. Note that if a CSA is too much commitment, the farm stand is open on weekends in the summer for choosing your own items.
