For the second year, Weston High School senior Aydin Abramson is organizing the 5K (3.1 mile) Smiles for 3.1 Miles –a low-key community run in honor of a fifth-grade friend who passed away from cancer. This year the run will take place on Saturday, May 20 at 8:30 am just before the start of Super Saturday in Weston.

“Last year, I saw the impact the 5K had on the community–and the big impact it had on me, ” said Aydin. “I am grateful to the people who came out that day for a good cause–I can remember that June day vividly. I wanted to do it again.”

The fundraiser will support Starlight, an organization that has the mission of making kids happy.

“Hospitalized kids are often away from things that make being a kid great,” said Aydin. Starlight provides fun programs like Starlight Virtual Reality, Starlight Hospital Wear, and Starlight s Gaming to thousands of hospitalized kids, at no cost to hospital partners.

The event is in Weston behind the fields of the high school (444 Wellesley Street) on Saturday, May 20th at 8:30 am. The event is $15.00 for students and $25.00 for others. On a personal note, Aydin is a member of the Weston Outdoor Track team and as far as I can tell, has no bad days. He has a smile and a kind word for everyone. Also, every time his mom drops him off, he always always always says “I love you, Mom” to her and if that doesn’t melt your heart… seek a community run for help.
