As Jesus rode into the city on a donkey, people praised him and waved palm branches. In our service, we, too, raise our palms and sing “Hosanna!” in a joyful recollection of that first Palm Sunday. St. Anne’s in-the-Fields’ Maundy Thursday service on April 6 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. commemorates the last night of Jesus’ life, including the last supper he had with his disciples, and is when we remember Jesus’ new commandment to love one another as he loves us. At the conclusion of the service, the altar is stripped bare, and for the only time all year, the consecrated body and blood of Christ are removed from the Sanctuary leaving us, too, bereft and waiting for Christ’s return. It begins outside on Holy Saturday evening, April 8 at St. Anne’s in-the-Fields from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. with the kindling of a new fire to represent Christ, the light of the world and the author of our salvation. A new Paschal candle is lit from the fire and the people process into the Sanctuary.
